Here is the first poem in the collection, if you are intrigued and want to read more of his work , it is available for free from the Gutenberg Project Library.
A collection of poems, that I revisit time and time again, there is always something new to glean from his writing. You can feel the anguish, self-loathing, his isolation and vulnerability which is quite overwhelming at times. The reader goes on this dark, strange journey and it is impossible to shake the feeling of unease from the detached, almost clinical way of writing. I have to confess, I have my favourite poems and I’ve tried to read the rest again to like them more but it is impossible. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this collection of sonnets, especially if you enjoy reading philosophical books.
Have you read the 35 Sonnets, what did you think whilst reading? Which numbers are your favourites?
