That Rainy Afternoon

Safe inside, toasty warm, while water pitter-patters on the roof…
We don’t notice the rain, softly, quietly falling, we are more preoccupied with getting things ready for tomorrow, putting away the laundry, cleaning the house from top to bottom, making beds, doing homework and grumbling all the way to our parents. It’s supposed to be SUNDAY, no school, no work, this was our mantra my sister and I.

Slowly but surely, the work would be done and having showered, changed into pyjamas we would devour dinner/lunch, whatever you call it…The day passed so quickly, its six o’clock and no matter how hard we wish for a holiday, school starts tomorrow. The window closes with a bang and we see the rain and the washing on the line, in a flash, it’s in our arms.Grinning madly despite Mum’s nagging and run towels on our heads, changing into warm socks and curling up in front of the heater. It felt so good to be outside, the sharp cool breeze whipping our hair over our faces and walking in the soft wet grass barefoot, the scent of flowers hanging in the air.
Drinking milky sweet tea and eating popcorn we all gather together in the living room, talking and joking about everything. We watch a rerun of Colombo on the television, laughing at my dad’s impression of the scatter-brained detective, as our hair is braided smelling of shea butter and mum’s perfume. The evening slips away like that and everyone heads to bed, I stay up a bit longer, safe and cosy under the covers re-reading one of my favourite books…
The Daily Post challenged us to write about that perfect rainy afternoon, this was a moment from my childhood, check out the other entries here:”Singin’ in the Rain.

I highly recommend this playlist, so soothing and relaxing. There is still nothing better than spending a gloomy afternoon reading a good book!

    1. Thank you, I was really shocked when I listened to it. The perfect collection of songs, I really recommend 8tracks- a great way to listen to different genres of music. 🙂 The only annoying thing is that you can’t replay each track more than once!
